So, you're wanting to pick up crochet but you're lost in a sea of yarn and hooks. I hear ya! All you really need to start learning is 1 hook, 1 ball of yarn, and a handy tutorial. Yarn comes in different thicknesses as do hooks. Sock yarn, 4ply, DK, Worsted, Aaron, Chunky, Super Chunky just to name a few. I'd usually say to start with nothing smaller than Double knit (usually referred to as DK), as it will be easier to see the stitches. Hook sizes start from less than 1mm and go all the way up to sizes 12mm and beyond, and for DK i'd maybe suggest a 5mm to start with.
The thicker the yarn the bigger the hook you'll want and there is no right or wrong. The bigger the hook the bigger the stitches will be, so it can take some experimenting to find what works for you.
To start most projects you'll need to be able to make a foundation chain
