FREE Pattern Santa Mug Cosy

Updated: Jul 25, 2020

This pattern is written in UK terms

I’ve been making mug cosies for a while now and usually they fasten through the handle, but I wanted something that I could make look like a jacket and have buttons on the front. This pattern works up quickly and is perfect if you’ve forgotten to get someone a gift. Add a plain cup and a sachet of hot chocolate, maybe even some marshmallows if you’re feeling particularly generous and you’ve got a great little gift. (Patterns may contain affiliate links, you still get the same price however I may earn a couple of pence if you choose to buy which helps to keep creating free content)

Terminology

SL – Slip stitch

CH – Chain

SC – Single Crochet

HDC – Half Double Crochet

DC – Double Crochet

You will need

Red DK (I like stylecraft special DK)

White (or Cream) DK https://tidd.ly/3fZ0aDL

4.5mm hook

3 buttons

Scissors and needle for your ends.

This cosy is made in 2 parts and trimmed in white to join the 2 pieces.

Part 1

Ch14

R1 – HDC in the 3rd chain. This will form a ch2 in the first row (see image below). HDC in each stitch along.

R2 – Ch2 and turn. HDC in each stitch (12) (your ch2 counts as a HDC) see image below for where your first and last stitch of each row should be if you’re unsure.

R3-R7 – Repeat row 2. You should now have 7 rows of half treble crochet. Tie off and weave in the red ends (or work over them later with the white)

Part 2

R1 – HDC in the 3rd chain. This will form a ch2 in the first row. HDC in each stitch along.

R2 – Ch2 and turn. HDC in each stitch (12)

R3-R17 – Repeat round 2. You should now have 17 rows of half treble crochet. Tie off and pop your

red away. You can either weave in your ends now or you can crochet over them with your next colour.

Edging

Take your white or cream yarn and holding your longest red piece lengthways in front of you attach

to the top right corner.

Ch1, single crochet along the shortest edge. (12)

Ch2, turn, HDC back along the white/cream SC. (12)

Ch1, turn, SC back along the white/cream HDC. (12)

You’ll now be working along the long red edge. Start by putting a single crochet in the same stitch you just ended on, then continue to SC along the long edge working all the way to the end.

Time to get your part 1 piece ready…

Chain 2 and slip stitch into the top corner of your part 1 piece. Continue to SC along the top until you reach the corner.

SC in the corner stitch again (so that there are 2 SC in the corner stitch) and continue to SC down along the edge.

Ch1, SC along the shortest edge. (12)

Ch3, turn, DC back along the white/cream SC. (12)

Ch1, turn, SC back along the white/cream DC. (12)

SC in the corner again so that you have 2 SC in the corner stitch.

SC along the edge until you get to the corner

CH2 and re-join to part 2 in the corner. SC to the end and tie off.

Sew on your buttons

It’s easier to sew on your top and bottom buttons first and then add your middle button in the center. Its easier to get them evenly spaced.

Make sure you are sewing the buttons onto the white half trebles as the treble crochet will act as your button holes.

I sewed mine in the white half trebles as follows.

1st button in the 2nd HDC , 2nd button in the 5th HDC, 3rd button in the 11th HDC
