Tshirt Yarn Pot Cover

Tshirt Yarn Plant pot holder by lets create a gift

Brighten up your plant pots with these simple, yet stylish looking pot covers. They’re also great for using as baskets and with such a massive range of t-shirt yarn available you’ll be able to find something to complement your décor!

This pattern uses a knit stitch, if you haven’t done this before please seen the notes and images and if needed have a look at the YouTube tutorial. If you do not work into the leg of the stitch your stitches won’t align. There will be a youtube tutorial available soon on the Crochet Collective channel. * affiliate links allow you to buy the things you need with no extra cost but I may earn a couple of pence if you purchase which helps fund new content

Stitches used

CH- Chain

SL – Slip stitch

SSL – Special slip stitch (see notes)

SC – Single crochet (into the leg of the stitch as per notes. (UK Double Crochet)

Reverse single Crochet

You will need

Tshirt yarn (I used Yarn art for this pattern which I bought here -https://www.facebook.com/woolnstuff33 )

10mm or 12mm hook - Deramores

Large Stitch Marker (I used a keyring but a hair clip or loose piece of yarn in another colour would also do, I also sell stitch markers here - https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LetsCreateAGift?ref=seller-platform-mcnav&section_id=29494450

Special Notes

Check your t-shirt yarn label for hook size guidance. Depending on your tension and thickness of yarn you may need to go up or down a hook size. If your work is curling in on itself, go up a hook size or loosen your tension, if the gaps are too large and loose then go down a hook size.

Stitch markers would make this basket much easier so that you can mark the start of each row. Place your marker into the 1st stitch of each row.

Special slip stitch – Insert hook into the leg of the stitch (see image on the right where the finger is pointing. This leg is under the longer horizontal stitch before your stitch marker), yarn over pull up a loop, insert hook into the BACK LOOP only of the next stitch (the one with your stitch marker in it), Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops to complete the special slip stitch. Your next stitch will then be in the leg of the first stitch of your round (the leg under the stitch marker)

All Single crochets (UK Double) will be worked into the leg of the sc from the previous round and not into the top of the stitch like normal. This will create a tight knit base and will align the stitches when working the sides of the basket. Please see image below and if needed refer to you tube for a video tutorial.

You are welcome to sell anything you make from this pattern, please credit lets create a gift as the pattern designer in your listing. For more video tutorials please visit Crochet Collective on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAqVuR1wC39D_31MovTXVJA/playlists?view_as=subscriber

Let’s begin

Round 1 - Create a magic ring and SC 5 into the ring. Join with a slip stitch

Round 2 – Ch1, 2sc into each stitch (as per notes). (10)

Round 3 – 2sc into each stitch (20), SSL

Round 4 – *2SC, SC* repeat from * to * all the way around, SSL (30)

Round 5 – SC in each stitch (30), SSL but this time go through both loops instead of just the back loop.

Remove your hook and turn your work over so that the wrong side is facing you. Re-insert your hook into the first stich of the previous round (see image below, it is the stitch before your loose loop now that your work is turned), put your loose loop back onto the hook and pull through.

Round 6 – Slip stitch all the way around

Turn your work around so that you now have the right side facing you again. Make sure you put your yarn back to the back of the work before you continue to crochet. You will now work into these slip stitches to start working the sides of the basket. Make sure you are working into the first stitch. If you are unsure then count around 30 stitches so that you know where to start as this stitch count will not change.

Round 7 - SC in each of the slip stitches from the previous round. It may look like there are 2 Vs, it will be the one furthest away from you which is the slip stitch.

Round 8 – SC in each stitch as you did for the base (into the leg of the stitch, not the V), SSL

Repeat Round 8 until your basket/pot cover is as tall as you would like it to be, and there will be one more round for finishing.

Last round – CH1, reverse SC in each stitch around. Keeping your work facing you as normal, sc in the first stitch to the right so that you are working around the rim of the basket backwards (SC into the V for a normal single crochet stitch and not into the leg as you have been doing previously).

Continue to SC into the stitch to the right all the way around. SS, tie off, and hide the tail by weaving into the backs of the stitches on the inside. I use my hook for this but you could use a big eyed needle if you have one.
